Job Description
As an Underground Utility Locator, you will be responsible for identifying and mapping underground utility lines such as gas, water, electrical, and telecommunications systems. You’ll utilize specialized equipment and your expertise to provide accurate and timely information, ensuring the safety of excavation activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate electromagnetic locators, ground-penetrating radar (GPR), and other utility detection tools to locate underground utilities.
- Accurately mark the locations of utilities using paint, flags, or other clear indicators.
- Read and interpret utility maps, blueprints, and schematics to understand the layout of underground systems.
- Document and report all utility locating activities, ensuring the information is up-to-date and accurate.
- Ensure safety standards and protocols are followed at all times when working in the field.
- Work closely with project managers, engineers, and construction teams to ensure safe excavation and construction practices.
- Troubleshoot and resolve any issues encountered during locating or mapping activities.
- Participate in routine maintenance and calibration of locating equipment to ensure optimal performance.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, walk long distances, and handle equipment.
Qualifications
- Certifications: Certification from the National Utility Locating Contractors Association (NULCA) or equivalent preferred. OSHA 10/30 certification is a preferred but not required.
- Experience: Minimum of 3 years of experience in utility locating, construction, or related fields. Hands-on experience with electromagnetic locators, GPR, or similar tools is essential.
- Knowledge: Understanding of underground utility systems (gas, water, sewer, electrical, telecom) and construction site safety.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and handle physical tasks such as walking long distances and carrying equipment.
- Communication: Strong communication skills to clearly report findings to team members and clients.
- Driver’s License: Valid driver’s license and clean driving record required.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) or other mapping software.
- Problem-solving abilities to deal with interference and difficult locating conditions.
